THURSDAY 13 – Red/White/Blue

Hello, hello. Happy Thursday! Once again I am posting my Thursday 13. Just a list of 13 things. It’s my new go-to post for all Thursdays and again, a big thank you to Liz over at Laws of Gravity.

My Thursday 13 today are from the year I turned 13.

It was 1976 and the U.S.A. was poppin’!
1 – It was America’s Bicentennial! The 200th anniversary of the adoption and signing of our Declaration of Independence.

2 – I remember all of the fire hydrants in our town being painted red, white, and blue. (Like this but not my pic.)

All of the rest of these 13 things also happened in 1976.

3 – The #1 pop song –
Loved it.

4 – The #1 country song –
Never heard of it.

5 – The #1 t.v. show –
Whatever happened to the oldest brother?

6 – And the Oscar goes to…
Such a good movie, even today. I watch it every time it comes on. Nurse Ratched was such a bitch.

7 – The #1 fast food restaurant –
I don’t remember it being that popular but we were kids. McDonalds was our #1.

8 – The #1 pop – Bicentennial Pepsi! What else?
I miss pop in glass bottles. It just tasted so much better and I feel like it stayed cold longer.

9 – 1976 Superbowl –
Pittsburgh Steelers 21/Dallas Plowboys 17

10 – The 1976 Kentucky Derby winner.

11 – 1976 baseball World Series – Cincinnati Reds 7/New York Yankees 2
I remember this whole play-off and the World Series. I had such a crush on Johnny Bench and he won the MVP that year.

12 – Annnnnd, even tho I was crushing on Johnny Bench, I was absolutely certain that I was going to marry Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser, the dark-haired one) from Starsky and Hutch.

I remember – because it’s written in my journal – that I had 2,916 pictures of Starsky and 1,671 and a half pictures of Hutch. (My brother ripped it.)

13 – When I was 13 I told my dad that I wanted to be a social worker. My dad who grew up on the streets of Chicago said, that’s a good way to get your throat slit when you go messing around with people’s families. Not sure what experience taught him that but it pretty much put the kibosh on that career choice for me.

My little sister, however, did go on to be a social worker. She didn’t get the same warning that I got. I just tell her, I guess daddy loved me more than you.

So, another Thursday 13 in the books. It’s a little bit challenging. You think you can just rattle off 13 things but it’s not that easy!

I hope you’ve all had a great Thursday. My computer has been lagging today and I have no idea why but it has been frustrating. It’s 8pm and 102 degrees. I seriously thank God every day for blessing us with air conditioning. A lot of people don’t have it and I have no idea how they’re getting thru this heat. There are cooling stations but they close early.

Anyway, so the weekend is coming up, do any of you have plans? My plans until the temps drop back into the low 80s is to stay inside with the AC, my books, and my crafts. It’s okay. I’m not isolated. I have my people. Lol.

  1. You haven’t heard Convoy?

I couldn’t possibly be a social worker. I think you have to be a social person first, and I don’t do “people”.

    1. No. Lol. And I’m resisting the urge to look it up on YouTube because I know it’s going to be some kind of yeehaw song and blood will start shooting out of my ears. Hahahaha. – Now that I hear the stories, I couldn’t have been either. I used to be really social. Not so much anymore.

  2. We are the exact same age! I have no memory of festive fire hydrants, but we loved just outside the city in a township, so no hydrants in our hood. I’ve never heard or seen a Popeyes until the last five years! But I can’t believe you don’t remember Convoy! It was more of a rap than a song. For some reason, trucker stuff was really popular around that time.

I’m partying all weekend with my peeps. Have to take advantage of patio season here!

    1. We are! And no. I have zero recollection of Convoy but I remember all that super trucker, break 1-9, radio check, come on back, stuff and I hated it. Hahahaha. – Your weekend sounds like tons of fun. Enjoy!

  3. Hi Karen, great 13 list! I turned 13 a few years ahead of you. Age 13 was not a good time in my life (orphanage, foster care :( ). But I remember 1976, I was older then so that was a better year in my life. I loved Starsky & Hutch and Happy Days. Your father had wise advice and LOL about what you told your sister! Hope you have a fantastic weekend and stay cool! :)

    1. Thank you Madilyn and I’m sorry you had to go thru that and at such a crucial age. I’m sending you great big hugs right now. – My dad did have wise advice and from the stories I hear, he was right and that would’ve been a big nope from me. It sounds so depressing and still dangerous. – I hope you’ve had a good weekend and staying cool is at the top of my list from now until fall! Lol. There is no break in our triple digits and the thought of even looking outside makes me wish it was snowing. Omgosh. And the wildfires. It’s so smoky.

      1. Thank you, Karen, I appreciate the hugs and hugs to you too! It is way too hot, we’re expecting temps near or at 100 degrees this week. Ugh! I am a fan of summer but that is even too hot for me! I’m sorry to hear about those wildfires and smoke there, that makes it even worse. Hope you stay cool!

    1. Yay! And 76′ was a fun one. I just loved all of the colors and celebrations going on. – I’m still going on with my 13 but it’s gonna’ take me a few days to think of them. Lol. That’s if I don’t get distracted. Hahahahaha.

  4. Your computer is lagging? Oh my, I am ready to put my computer through a wall right about now. It’s making me crazy. (It’s time to replace it, and I will do that within the next couple days.)

1976… For the Bicentennial I was 4 (almost 5–birthday’s at the end of the month). I don’t remember 1976 all that well…

    1. Liz, we pay for the fastest internet possible because my son is a gamer. My computer should not be lagging. My son tells me I have too much stuff saved on it even tho I’ve saved a ton on an external hard drive. Apparently I need another one. My son says I need a new computer too but I just can’t toss it while it’s still working. – Wow.. You’re a baby. :) – 5 yrs in 76′. It was probably just another 5 yr. old day/year for you. When you’re 5 everything’s a big deal. – What day is your bday??? :)

      1. I can’t blame the internet. Ours may not be super fast, but it works fine. It’s the computer.

My birthday? It’s the end of July. Literally.
