SATURDAY 9 – Georgia, Georgia

Today I’m joining the Saturday 9 hosted by Sam.
What is the Saturday 9? – Super short explanation. –
9 questions every Saturday. There may be a theme, there may not be. There are no rules because Sam hates rules.
It’s her blog. She does whatever the hell she wants. Sam’s a little sassy.

Okay. Here we go!

Saturday 9: Georgia on My Mind (1978)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) These lyrics refer to “an old sweet song.” What old sweet song is a favorite of yours?

Dan Fogelberg – Same Auld Lang Syne
This song gets me every time…

2) Composer Hoagy Carmichael said he was inspired by saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer to write a song about Georgia. In those days, bands traveled by bus and Frankie enjoyed rolling through Georgia. Hoagy recalled that Frankie even volunteered the first two words, “Georgia, Georgia …” If we were to organize a Saturday 9 bus trip, where would you recommend we go for lovely scenery?

Northern Michigan – This is Lake Michigan Beach, one of my favorite places on the planet.

3) This version of “Georgia on My Mind” was controversial before it was even recorded. Willie Nelson’s label, Columbia, didn’t see the point of their outlaw country star singing an old standard that was associated with Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald. Willie had the last laugh. This record was a hit and Willie won a Grammy. Tell us about a time when you were a success despite opposition.

When I beat stage 4 cancer.

4) While it’s at odds with his “outlaw” image, Willie was a popular and active high school student. He played three sports and was a member of Future Farmers of America. What school activities did you participate in during your teen years?

5) Willie once worked as a tree trimmer, so clearly he didn’t suffer from acrophobia. How about you? Do you have a fear of heights?

It’s not the highs I fear, it’s the lows…

6) He wrote the lyrics to one of his biggest hits, “On the Road Again,” during a flight, using the airplane barf bag as scrap paper. That was back in 1980. In 2025, do you handwrite onto note paper, or do you make all your “notes to self” digitally.

Mostly handwritten, but when I need to make sure I don’t forget, I use my phone.

7) In 1978, when Willie was singing “Georgia on My Mind,” audiences were flocking to see the movie Grease. What’s your favorite song from Grease?

This one because I love Stockard Channing.

8) Also in 1978, Karina Smirnoff was born. After spending her early years in the Ukraine, she came to America and found success on Dancing with the Stars.

Are you a DWTS fan?

Not even a little bit. I would need to read this before I even sat down to watch.

9) Random question: Do you ever carry a backpack?

No, but if I did, I’m pretty sure it would look like this.

Well, that took me much longer than I anticipated. I have no idea why my spacing decided to go wonky, but it took forever to fix it. But, I did the Saturday 9 and you can too. Write your post, then click on the Saturday 9 logo up above and add yourself to Mr. Linky so we can all come around and visit you!

I hope you’re all having a great weekend so far. It’s been storming for a while here today and I would love it if it continued on through the night. Rainy nights are the best nights for sleeping.

Enoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. That was a really neat concept for a post. I enjoyed all your answers. I have zero interest in DWTS, even though I’m a reality show junkie. Those types of competition shows just aren’t my thing. My kids never understood why we didn’t carry backpacks when we were in school. It’s because we did our homework in study halls or in classes while teachers stood there lecturing! Having to carry one book home was not a big deal and we didn’t have water bottles!

    1. It is a neat idea. It’s been around a while and I guess I’m just missing the old school blogs. – DWTS isn’t my thing either. Mainly because I get embarrassed for people who think they can dance but can’t. It’s the same way I feel about the singing shows. “My mama said I had the voice of an angel…” I wish one time one of those judges would say, “your mama lied.” Lol. – I didn’t have a backpack either. We were less encumbered back then. Like you said, we got our work done in school and maybe had to bring a book home for homework or a library book. I swear kids just throw anything and everything in now. Clothes, phones, guns…

    1. Gosh that song just gets me teary eyed every time I hear it. And thank you. I am happy I beat it too but I didn’t do it alone. I had my heavenly team and my earthly team and all I had to do is believe and trust.

    1. Lol. And I only may have it once or twice, 4 times at the most. Lol. Mr. Washington is right. Growing up back east we actually had mud season. When I lived in the south we had nothing but clay. The pros to that is I never had my shoes sucked off like in the mud. The cons were that clay is slippery. Definitely the slip and slide of the south.

  2. If your backpack would look like that, then you’d probably be interested in how kids these days carry theirs. That is, how they carry 2. Because many who are involved in sports or extracurriculars have so much stuff that they carry two backpacks. One on their back, and one on their front.

  3. Thanks for visiting my Saturday 9 post! I am a Dan Fogelberg fan, too. I am also a cancer survivor and agree that it sucks. Have a good week ahead!

  4. I had to look really hard to find your comment section. That backpack was so funny! I have watched Dances for years and my husband watched it with me. He is not much of a dancer though we tried Disco back in the 70’s. Too many aches and pains to dance now! Have a great week!

    1. Thank you! You know I was just thinking about moving my comment section. Lol. I loved disco back then and I still love those old songs today. The dance moves aren’t quite the same but I’m moving!

  5. Interesting QnA and I love the music angle! Congrats for beating stage 4 cancer! May you enjoy a long and healthy rest of your life, my friend. 💖 I’ve never watched DWTS, nor have I ever carried a backpack. Not into “roughing” it! 😆
